Chelsea’s iconic clock tower was built in 1907 by Frank Glazier. Once a water tower, the clock tower and complex were renovated and reopened by McKinley Associates in 2007. The clock tower and surrounding buildings make up the Clock Tower Complex and now houses numerous offices and businesses. The courtyard behind the Clocktower features a space to gather for music, art, celebrations or just relaxing.
Kathy Clark, a local historian, said the Clocktower was once the tallest structure in Washtenaw County at 135 feet.
Today, it remains a landmark in the city.
Clark's research showed that the tower served the duel purpose of holding a 20,000-gallon water tank for fire protection and keeping local residents punctual with four bells that chimed each hour.
The Clocktower has housed businesses that manufactured everything from stoves, screw machines and motorcycles to aircraft engines and artillery parts.
